The Magnolias, 1850 Holly Springs, Mississippi (Cookie’s Fortune).

The Magnolias, 1850 Holly Springs, Mississippi (Cookie’s Fortune).

Last weekend I and a group of friends spent a long weekend in Holly Springs Mississippi. The highlight of the weekend was to visit historic homes during a Christmas tour. One of my favorate homes on the tour was a grand Gothic Revival villa called The Magnolias, built in 1850 by William F. Mason one of the founding fathers of Holly Springs as a wedding present for his daughter Elizabeth.  This amazing house containing some original furnishings, the house has been owned by the present young family for about 5 years.  It was used as a primary filming location for the 1999 Robert Altman film "Cookie's Fortune".  During the Civil War the house was ransacked by Federal soldiers in 1862. They cut the paintings from their frames, tore the draperies from the windows, and stripped the carpets from the floors.

The house boast intricate New Orleans influence cast iron veranda made in Holly Springs at the Jones McElwain Foundry.
